Galaxies within galaxies in the TIMER survey: stellar populations of inner bars are scaled replicas of main bars

چکیده

Inner bars are frequent structures in the local Universe and thought to substantially influence nuclear regions of disc galaxies. In this study we explore structure dynamics inner by deriving maps radial profiles their mean stellar population content comparing them previous findings context main bars. To end, exploit observations obtained with integral-field spectrograph MUSE three double-barred galaxies TIMER sample. The results indicate that can be clearly distinguished based on properties alone. More precisely, show significantly elevated metallicities depleted [ α /Fe] abundances. Although they exhibit slightly younger ages compared disc, typical age differences small, except at outer ends. These ends parts, an effect known from as orbital separation. particular, youngest stars (i.e. those lowest velocity dispersion) seem occupy most elongated orbits along (inner) bar major axis. We speculate these distinct could connected morphological feature ansae. Radial metallicity enhancements flat axis, but steeper slopes minor This mixing is also indicates affect distribution stars. summary, line results, appear scaled down versions seen suggests picture a ‘galaxy within galaxy’, discs being dynamically equivalent galaxy discs.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Double-Barred Galaxies I. A Catalog of Barred Galaxies with Stellar Secondary Bars and Inner Disks

I present a catalog of 67 barred galaxies which contain distinct, elliptical stellar structures inside their bars. Fifty of these are double-barred galaxies: a small-scale, inner or secondary bar is embedded within a largescale, outer or primary bar. I provide homogenized measurements of the sizes, ellipticities, and orientations of both inner and outer bars, along with global parameters for th...

Deficiency of "Thin" Stellar Bars in Seyfert Host Galaxies.

Using all available major samples of Seyfert galaxies and their corresponding closely matched control samples of nonactive galaxies, we find that the bar ellipticities (or axial ratios) in Seyfert galaxies are systematically different from those in nonactive galaxies. Overall, there is a deficiency of bars with large ellipticities (i.e., "thin" or "strong" bars) in Seyfert galaxies compared to ...

Double Bars, Inner Disks, and Nuclear Rings in Barred Galaxies

We present results of a high-resolution imaging survey of barred S0–Sa galaxies which demonstrate that the central regions of these galaxies are surprisingly complex. We see many inner bars — small, secondary bars (typically less than a kiloparsec in radius) located inside of, and probably rotating faster than, the large primary bars. These are present in about one quarter to one third of all o...
